LinkedIn has announced the retirement of its “Top Voice” badges, which were previously awarded to users contributing to Collaborative Articles. Launched in March 2023, these articles utilized AI-generated prompts and invited LinkedIn users to share their insights, driving significant engagement.

The “Top Voice” badge served as a mark of authority for contributors, encouraging millions to participate. In fact, contributions to Collaborative Articles saw a fourfold increase in weekly member participation by March 2024. However, starting October 8, 2024, users will no longer automatically earn this badge, with existing badges set to expire within 60 days.

The decision to remove the badges stems from feedback indicating that the system was not accurately reflecting true expertise. LinkedIn acknowledged that the automatic awarding of these badges led to concerns over quality, as some contributors lacked the necessary credentials or knowledge.

In response to user complaints about the credibility of “Top Voice” experts, LinkedIn has opted to enhance quality standards rather than maintain a system that could misrepresent expertise. This change may also decrease interest in Collaborative Articles, which have become a popular content format on the platform.

All Top Voice badges will be removed by December 7, 2024, marking a significant shift in how LinkedIn recognizes contributions within its community. While Collaborative Articles may continue to provide exposure, the loss of these badges may alter the dynamics of user engagement on the platform.
