The Bhagavad Gita through Saṃskṛtam – Beginner I course provides students with a strong foundation in Saṃskṛtam, enabling them to engage with the Bhagavad Gita in its original language. This course introduces the origins of Saṃskṛtam sounds, pronunciation rules, and key grammatical concepts, allowing students to construct and comprehend simple sentences.
Students will explore the fundamental elements of Saṃskṛtam grammar, including nouns, pronouns, and verbs, as well as the concepts of person, number, and gender. They will progressively learn to identify subjects, objects, and verb forms within sentences. The course also introduces grammatical cases, with a focus on the first and sixth cases, empowering students to create sentences in the simple present tense.
A significant aspect of this course is its emphasis on the Bhagavad Gita, one of the most revered texts of Hindu philosophy. Students will be introduced to the concept of poetic meter (chanda), with particular attention to the anuṣṭubh meter, in which much of the Bhagavad Gita is composed. They will learn to chant and recite selected verses from Chapter 1 while also delving into their meanings and interpretations.
By the end of the Bhagavad Gita through Saṃskṛtam – Beginner I course, students will have developed essential skills in reading, reciting, and understanding Saṃskṛtam. This course serves as a stepping stone for deeper engagement with Hindu philosophical texts while fostering an appreciation for the beauty and precision of the Saṃskṛtam language.
