While traveling by one of the best airlines in the world, Lufthansa, one must be familiar with the Lufthansa baggage policy so that your journey becomes a hassle-free and smooth one. The policy of Lufthansa prescribes stern rules and regulations for carry-on bags as well as checked bags and special and overweight baggage.
Carry-On Baggage Allowance
Lufthansa permits every one of its passengers to carry a minimum of one carry-on bag on board. The quantity of bags permitted varies based on class of travel:
Economy Class & Premium Economy Class: 1 carry-on bag
Business Class & First Class: 2 carry-on bags
All carry-on luggage should not exceed 8 kg (17 lbs) and within the size 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.7 x 15.7 x 9 in). A single personal item, for instance, a laptop bag, handbag, or briefcase not larger than the size 40 x 30 x 10 cm, is allowed for passengers too.
Checked Baggage Allowance
The number and biggest weight of bags checked also differ with destination and class of travel:
Economy Class: 1 bag up to 23 kg (50 lbs)
Premium Economy Class: 2 bags up to 23 kg each
Business Class: 2 bags up to 32 kg each (70 lbs)
First Class: 3 bags up to 32 kg each
The combined length + width + height of all bags must not exceed 158 cm (62 inches).
Note that Economy Light fares usually do not have checked bags included for flights within Europe, but it is an optional charge to include it.
Excess and Overweight Baggage
If your load weighs or equals more than the stipulated amount, Lufthansa levies excess baggage. These depend on the route and how much over the allowance your load is. Excess baggage can be paid for online before departure (which is less expensive) or in the airport when checking in.
Above 32 kg, shipping of cargo is recommended by Lufthansa because the heavy bags can be rejected at the airport.
Special and Sports Baggage
Special baggage, sports gear, musical instruments, prams, and medical devices enjoy special policies in Lufthansa. They are usually pre-notified and pay extra charges for weight and size.
The small-sized ones that fit in carry-on size are acceptable to bring onboard. The larger-sized ones will need to be checked or may have to buy an extra seat.
Travel Tips
Check baggage allowance on your particular flight and class of travel prior to check-in.
Budget extra charges with Lufthansa's online baggage calculator.
Mark all bags with your contact details clearly.
Purchase additional baggage in advance online to save.
Lufthansa baggage policy is helpful but needs to be closely read. When you know what the size and weight restrictions are on carry-on bags and checked bags and how to deal with overflow or special items, you can prevent last-minute airport distress. Be certain to check the Lufthansa website or call customer service for the most up-to-date information on baggage policies for your flight.
