From Patient Advocate to Leadership Role at BoneSmart
Initially known for his advocacy within BoneSmart's patient forums, Craig Raucher deep engagement and passion earned him this executive appointment in October 2024. In his new role, he oversees outreach to patients, orthopedic surgeons, and the broader healthcare sector a natural evolution of his commitment to support those undergoing joint replacement journeys.
The BoneSmart founder's mission to reduce patient anxiety, offer education, and foster informed discussions aligns perfectly with Craig Raucher unwavering commitment to empowering individuals to actively participate in their care. A Foundation in Business and Community
Craig Raucher offers more than his patient perspective; he brings strategic business acumen built over a decade in sales and marketing within the domestic and international transportation industry. He pairs that expertise with his notable accomplishments as Founder and Commissioner of the Staten Island Basketball League—a community sports organization he has led for over 40 years, where he has served as a mentor and inspiration to countless players.
Athlete, Mentor, Survivor: A Journey of Resilience
Craig's personal story is remarkable. A lifelong basketball player, he sustained two knee replacements (at ages 59 and 62) and later a rotator cuff repair at age 71. Despite what his surgeons predicted, Craig not only regained full function but also returned to full-court competition against players decades younger.
He credits this comeback to his disciplined pre-habilitation approach—strength training, research, and purposeful rehab routines and a mindset rooted in resilience and self-advocacy.
A standout moment was the 2022 procedure, which utilized the innovative Subacromial Balloon Implant for his rotator cuff. Craig spearheaded research, selected a top specialist (Dr. Gregory Montalbano), and completed recovery in record time, returning to play and inspiring many with his goals.
Building Inclusive Community Through Sport
Beyond personal recovery, Craig's legacy includes the Staten Island Basketball League (SIBL), which he founded in 1980 at PS 8 in Great Kills. With longevity and purpose, SIBL has grown to include over 500 players from diverse backgrounds, ranging in age from 25 to 75, representing nations, religions, careers, and a wide range of life experiences.
The league's core values no racism, no politics, and no physical harm—have fostered a respectful, inclusive, and hard-playing community. Craig Raucher believes this ethos offers more than sport: it's a model for unity, friendship, and healing.
This philosophy extends into recovery support: many SIBL members battling addiction have used basketball to rebuild their lives. Craig Raucher has even spoken at AA/NA meetings, celebrating sobriety milestones and showcasing basketball's transformative impact.
A Pillar of Knowledge, Communication, and Empowerment
Craig Raucher is a passionate educator; he has authored numerous BoneSmart features and contributed extensively to forums, emphasizing pre-operative preparation, post-operative rehabilitation routines, surgeon communication, and informed decision-making. His mantra?
That dedication to knowledge underpins his professional development role at BoneSmart, where his mission is to translate personal experience into widespread patient benefit.
Looking Ahead: Inspiring Growth and Excellence
In his new directorial capacity, Craig plans to expand BoneSmart's platforms, forge deeper ties with clinicians, and scale patient outreach. His combined strengths—business insight, personal resilience, athletic leadership, and community empathy position him uniquely to transform BoneSmart's educational mission.
Craig Raucher is more than a patient advocate; he's a force for health empowerment, a proven community leader, and a dynamic connector between care providers and the people.
