India Visa Policy for American Nationals: What to Know

Types of Indian Visas for American Residents

India provides various types of visas to fulfil the needs of visits:

Tourist Visa: For travel as a tourist in the way of visiting, sightseeing, and casually visiting friends and family. American citizens can have a tourist visa which will be valid for six months to ten years with multiple entries permitted. But every longer stay should not exceed 180 days.

Business Visa: For business activities such as meetings, conferences, or negotiations. Like the tourist visa, the business visa is ten years, multiple entry, but for each visit only 180 days.

Employment Visa: For work in India. The Employment Visa is granted for the length of the work contract, a maximum of five years. The employment documents and qualifications need to be submitted.

Student Visa: For students going to India to pursue studies. Generally a course duration valid visa or a five-year duration. Evidence of admission to one of the mentioned schools and colleges of India must be produced.

Medical Visa: For medical care in India. The medical visa shall be for a duration of a maximum of six months, as the case may be, as per the requirement according to medical needs. The concerned authorities of the applicants shall submit the medical documents.

For convenience in the visa procedure, India has launched an e-Visa facility for American citizens for tourism, business, or medical treatment for a short duration. The e-Visa is a 60-day visa from the date of arrival and allows double entry for tourism and business and triple entry for medical treatment. The applicants are required to apply online at least four days before the date of arrival in India.

Application Process

To apply for a visa, do the following:

Fill the online application form: Complete the visa application form on the official website of the government of India. Make sure all information is correct and the same as in your passport.

Gather supporting documents: Supporting documents can be a valid passport, recent recent passport-size photographs, residence proof, and other documents as per the category of the visa.

Submit the Application: Post the application or hand deliver it through the authorized visa service provider, i.e., VFS Global.

Pay the Visa Fee: The visa fee varies according to different types and periods of the visa. Payment of the visa fee is either done online or at the application centre as the case may be with respect to the submission mode.

Take an Interview (if required): Some categories of visas might require a trip to the consulate in person to sit down for an interview.

Obtain the Visa: Once approved, your visa will then be stamped in your passport and sent by mail.

Important Requirements

Passport Validity: The passport must be valid for at least six months from your arrival date in India and must have one or two blank pages for the visa to be attached.

Photos: Recent white-background passport-size photographs are usually required.

Other Documents: Other documents such as proof of employment, a school acceptance letter, or a medical certificate may be required depending on the type of visa.
