Option 1: Direct Replacement of Factory Dome Light
Step 1: Remove the Original Light Cover
Cut off vehicle power: Turn off the engine, shut all interior lights, remove the key or lock the car and wait 2 minutes to prevent short circuits and blown fuses.
Insert the plastic pry tool into the gap of the dome light housing and gently pry loose the plastic clips. Do not force it; there are 2 to 3 internal clips.
Once pried open, locate the halogen bulb base, then pull the wiring connector straight off.
Step 2: Install the LED Bulb
Take out the stock halogen bulb and plug the LED Canopy Lights into the connector. Polarity matters: if it does not light up, flip the bulb 180 degrees and reinsert.
Test the light: Open the door to trigger the dome light function, confirm it illuminates without flickering or error alerts.
Reassemble: Tuck the LED bulb back into the slot, align the clips and press the cover firmly to lock it in place.
Advantages
No extra wiring, no cutting factory wires, finished in 5 minutes.
Notes
Some vehicles require error-free decoder LEDs. Standard LEDs may trigger dashboard warning lights or flickering when doors open; purchase vehicle-specific decoder LED bulbs.
Option 2: Add Extra Surface-Mount LED Canopy Lights
Step 1: Choose a Power Source (Two Options)
Tap power from the factory dome light (recommended, no damage): Wire in parallel with the original dome light harness to turn on automatically when doors open and off when doors close.
Constant/ACC fuse box power: Controlled by a separate switch; stays powered even when the vehicle is off.
Step 2: Run Wires Through Interior Trim
Gently pry open gaps along the A-pillar and headliner edge with the pry tool. Route the LED power cables hidden inside the headliner lining for a clean, invisible install.
Run wires along the roof and down the A-pillar to the dome light or fuse box. Secure cables with ties to eliminate rattling while driving.
Step 3: Wire Connection (Critical to Prevent Short Circuits)
Wire identification: Red LED wire = positive (+), black wire = ground/negative (-)
Method A: Parallel Connection to Factory Dome Light
The factory connector has two wires: one constant power wire and one door-triggered ground wire.
Connect the LED red wire to the factory positive wire, and the black LED wire to the factory ground wire. Wrap all splices fully with insulating tape to avoid bare metal short circuits.
Method B: ACC Fuse Box Tap
Open the fuse box under the driver’s dashboard, find an ACC fuse (powered only when the ignition is on, e.g., cigarette lighter fuse).
Use a fuse tap to splice the positive wire; fasten the negative wire to a bare metal bolt on the vehicle frame for grounding.
Wipe the roof surface clean. Mount the light directly using double-sided 3M tape. For heavy-vibration trucks, reinforce with small self-tapping screws.
Power on for testing: Verify automatic door activation and normal switch control with no flickering.
Snap all A-pillar and headliner trim panels back into place, tidy up excess wiring and conceal loose cables.
Critical Safety Precautions
Always disconnect power before wiring work to avoid blowing vehicle fuses.
All wire splices must be fully insulated; exposed copper touching vehicle metal will cause short circuits and fire risks.
Do not tear the headliner trim aggressively—broken clips will leave the roof loose and create rattling noises.
High-power LED lights require heat dissipation; avoid mounting flush against fabric roof lining to prevent heat damage or adhesive residue.
For high-wattage LED lights installed in trucks, add an independent switch and dedicated fuse to reduce strain on factory wiring.
Common Troubleshooting
LED does not turn on: Reversed positive/negative polarity (flip the connector); loose wiring terminals; blown fuse (replace with matching amperage fuse).
Dim glow or flickering after turning off: Factory halogen light detection circuit—switch to decoder LED bulbs.
Light fails to shut when doors close: Incorrect ground wire connection; reattach to the proper door trigger harness.
